Join AGC For Construction Safety Week - May 3  – 7, 2021

AGC of America is a lead sponsor for Construction Safety Week, which started back in 2014 to inspire everyone in the industry to be leaders in safety. The annual campaign continues to focus on the original mission of:

  • Thanking workers for supporting safety and recognizing their efforts to be injury free

  • Increasing awareness of the importance of being committed to safety, every day

  • Encouraging everyone to share best practices and to work together to strengthen the industry’s safety culture

  • Conducting on-site safety awareness activities to support education

Construction firms across the U.S. and Canada have joined forces for the annual Safety Week, a construction industry-wide education and awareness event. Safety Week 2021 will be held May 3-7. This year’s theme is “Holistic Safety - Be Present. Be Focused. Be Safe.”

We encourage companies to focus on these daily topics as you plan conversations, demonstrations and activities that reinforce our commitment as project teams, companies and an entire industry to Be Present, Be Focused and Be Safe. Remember to follow federal, state and local guidelines to safely plan your Construction Safety Week activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Monday, May 3 - Be Present, Be Focused

Mental awareness is critically important for workers to stay safe. Mental distractions can rob a worker of their focus and lead to serious or deadly accidents. It is critically important that workers watch out for each other and learn to recognize the signs of someone who may be struggling. Being mentally focused on the job means being prepared, identifying risks, and knowing what to do in a crisis. It’s not enough to be focused on the work and the task at hand, workers must be focused on their safety and the safety of everyone around them. It is important that workers know there are resources available to help them be present and focused.

Tuesday, May 4 – Healthy Mind, Healthy Body

Being safe means paying attention to both mind and body. It extends beyond wearing hardhats and safety glasses. It means recognizing how important mental health really is to everyone’s overall safety. From suicide to distractions that lead to devastating accidents, it is important that we all recognize the importance of total wellbeing. When workers are physically and mentally safe everyone wins.

Wednesday, May 5 – Be Relentless

Preventing injuries means relentlessly paying attention to risk. Using mind and body to always make safety number one. Executing the fundamentals is critically important. It starts by wearing full PPE 100 percent of the time. It means going back to the basics by learning and embracing hand safety techniques. These practices and many more like wearing seatbelts, learning first aid and always being tied off saves lives and makes our industry safer every day. Mental discipline is a critical element of total wellbeing.
