AGC
Spring Conference 2008
150 AGC San Diego members
attended the 2008 Spring Conference held Thursday thru
Sunday at the RIU Palace hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Conference Chairperson Tom Anderson, Bergelectric, and AGC
San Diego 2008 President John Daley, Jr., welcomed those
attending during a reception held Thursday evening on a deck
overlooking the Sea of Cortez.
Special guests for the event included Steve
Sandherr, AGC of America CEO and Tony Fulton, the
recently retired University Architect for the Department of Civil
and Environmental Engineering at San Diego State University.
Steve and Tony were the “headliners” for the Saturday morning
business meeting, which was attended by an overflow crowd.
Steve discussed a number of key issues that are
facing the industry during 2008. He also gave an overview of the
national elections and shared with the members the Washington
perspective on the upcoming Presidential race, and key congressional
races and how they may affect the construction industry.
Tony focused on how owners view general contractors,
specialty contractors and the services the industry provides. He
emphasized the characteristics owners look for when they consider
using a contractor on a repeat basis.
The event wasn’t all business however!! (surprise,
surprise!!)
AGC members took part in fishing excursions on the
Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean, golf tournaments at the Cabo
San Lucas Country Club, shopping tours of the area, and just
relaxing around the outstanding beachfront facilities of the RIU
Palace, which is located just north of Cabo San Lucas.
We
would especially like to thank the sponsors of this year’s Spring
Conference. Their generous support made the 2008 Spring Conference
an outstanding event.

And yes, the rumors are true. Ted Rossin,
Rossin Steel, did win the Saturday Golf tournament as well as
winning back the $100 he lost to AGC SD Executive Vice President,
Jim Ryan at a previous Spring Conference. Ryan, who was low on
cash, presented an IOU to Ted during the Saturday evening banquet.
Ryan reported this morning that the “check is in the mail.”
Anyway…it was a great Spring Conference. Information
on the 2009 Spring Conference will be sent to the membership within
the next couple of months.

Apprenticeship
Special thanks to

support of our equipment operator apprenticeship program. Strong
contractor and board support are two factors, which distinguish our
program, and we are grateful for their contributions.
Construction
Unemployment in California
AGC of America has forwarded to us a report from the
Wachovia Economics Group that highlights the “uptick” in the
unemployment rates in California. The report attributes most of the
problem to the state’s continuing housing slump.
Taken from Wachovia
Economics Group publication
The Housing Slump is Taking a Heavy Toll Across
California
“Nonfarm employment has dipped into negative
territory in California, with payrolls falling 0.1 percent over the
past year. Overall employment is off by 12,000 jobs statewide.
Most of the declines in construction can be traced back to housing.
Construction employment has plunged 9.6 percent, producing a net
loss of 87,900 jobs. Employment in the factory sector is off 1.6
percent, producing a net loss of 22,900 jobs. Many of those losses
are off 1.6 percent, producing a net loss of 22,900 jobs. Many of
those losses are likely in construction-related fields, such as
building products and household goods. Financial services are the
other big loser, with employment plunging 4.7 percent over the past
year, and a net loss of 43,100 jobs. Most of these losses are in he
mortgage banking and related industries.”
SDSU’s First Filanc
Lecture in Construction Ethics This Thursday, April 24th
This April 24th, SDSU’s J.R.
Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program will host
the first Filanc Lecture in Construction Ethics, beginning at
5:30pm at the Prado. This is the only recurring
lecture focused on construction ethics in the country, and was
conceived as an opportunity for the San Diego construction industry
to hold regular forums on this critical topic. All AGC member
companies are invited.
The first Distinguished Lecturer will be Mr. Oscar
Boldt, Chairman of the Boldt Group, Inc.
of Appleton, Wisconsin. Mr. Boldt will describe the ethical and
financial considerations involved in the Boldt Group decision to
provide construction equipment to the rescue and recovery efforts at
the Murrah Building after it was devastated in the infamous
explosion.
The evening will begin with a reception beginning at
5:30pm. The lecture will start at 6:30 p.m. accompanied by dessert,
and the event will end by 7:30pm. There is no cost to attend.
