AGC San Diego Members Honored during AGC of America’s Annual Convention
Over 45 AGC San Diego
members attended the AGC of America’s 88th Annual Convention which was
held last week in San Antonio, Texas. The AGC of America represents 98
chapters from throughout the United States and has over 30,000 member
firms.
On Saturday, AGC San
Diego member Doug Barnhart
CEO of member firm Barnhart, Inc.
was elected the Senior Vice President of the AGC of America. Doug is
now “in the chairs” to be installed as AGC of America’s
89th
President during the March 2008
AGC Convention, which will be held in Las Vegas. To become AGC of
America’s President takes years of high level volunteer work and
leadership. He has served on the AGC’s Executive Committee for several
years. Serving as the AGC of America’s President will involve
representing the industry at the highest levels in the government, with
other industry partners, and with other industries. Since 1918 when
President Woodrow Wilson asked the Construction industry to form an
association that could represent the industry, the President of the AGC
has been designated the main spokesperson for our industry.
Congratulations Doug!!!!
We encourage AGC San
Diego members to make plans now to attend the 89th AGC of America’s
Annual Convention in Las Vegas March of 2008. AGC San Diego will host
an evening reception for several hundred guests to honor Doug and Nancy
Barnhart prior to Doug’s installation as the AGC’s 89th
President. All AGC San Diego member firms will be invited to the
reception which will be held at the Bellagio Hotel.
In addition, we are
proud to announce that AGC San Diego members continued to distinguish
themselves in the AGC’s annual Construction Safety Excellence Awards
Program. TB Penick & Sons, Inc.
finished first in the
Specialty Division 300,000 – 700,000
work hours; Roel Construction Co.,
Inc. finished second
in the Building Division
300,000-700,000 work hours; and
Erickson-Hall Construction Co. finished
second in the
Municipal Division 100,000-
300,000 work hours.
CSEA has become the
premier safety competition within the construction industry. To reach
the final competition at the AGC Convention, participant firms must
first win the competition at the local level in their home chapter among
the AGC’s 98 Chapters nationwide. The winners from the local
competitions are then sent to another competition in which the best of
the local winners in each category are selected to compete in the
national competition during the AGC’s Annual Convention in March.
During the competition at the AGC Convention, each firm is required to
present their program during a formal presentation in front of a select
group of judges representing construction users and government or
university officials. It is a very intense, detailed competition.
Congratulations to
T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc., Roel
Construction Co. Inc., and Erickson-Hall Construction Co.
…..and thanks to Willis
for sponsoring this outstanding
competition.
And that is not
all….during the past few years, AGC San Diego members have also had more
than their share of winners in the Build America Competition, which
honors projects each year that are the best of the best of those
constructed from throughout the nation. This year
Barnhart, Inc.
was honored with a Build America
Award for the NCRD
Bachelor Enlisted Quarters Renovation project.
Congratulations!!!!
Engineering General Contractors’ Council to Meet with SANDAG, Caltrans,
and California Transportation Commission Leaders – All AGC Members are
Invited!
On Tuesday, April 3,
at 12:00 Noon, AGC’s Engineering Contractors’ Council will hold its
first meeting of 2007. Note: This meeting had been scheduled to begin
at 11:30 AM, but needed to be pushed back until 12 Noon.
Scott Erreca
(Erreca’s, Inc.) is the
new chair of the Committee, which provides policy recommendations to
AGC’s Board of Directors. This is a timely meeting, as the issues to be
addressed relate to transportation funding. Special Guests will be Gary
Gallegos, Executive Director of the SANDAG, Pedro Orso Delgado, Director
of District 11, and John Chalker, member of the California
Transportation Commission.
We will review the
recent actions of the CTC to allocate $451 million of work on I-5, I-15,
& I-805. The construction timeline for these and other projects (and
the potential delivery methods), legislative actions pertaining to
Proposition 1B implementation, sizing of projects, future funding needs,
and an update on TransNet will be provided. Of course, we will continue
to express our concerns about the proposed diesel emission regulations!
All AGC members are
invited to attend this important meeting. We have attached a
reservation form for you to complete and fax back to the AGC. We hope
you can make it on Tuesday, April 3 from 12 Noon to 1:30 PM. Lunch will
be provided!
AGC’s Political Action Fundraising Underway…More Funds Needed!
By Brad Barnum, Vice
President Government Relations
You may have heard
that a Presidential Primary will be held in California next February 5.
What you may not have heard is that we can expect measures to be added
to the ballot that would normally have been put on the scheduled 2008
Primary Election on June 3.
Why I am telling you
this, you ask? Well, in order to be prepared to support or oppose
ballot measures next year, and to support pro-infrastructure investment
candidates, we must have financial resources to provide to the various
campaigns. That is why we have started our political action fundraising
in earnest!
Great news...AGC Members Step Up to the Plate!
Our Political Action Committee Chairman,
John Daley, Jr. (Daley
Corporation), and I are happy to report that we have raised
nearly $110,000 for our
PAC this year and an
additional $80,000 for 2008. The contributions range from $100 to
$5,000, and they have come from 39 of the companies who contributed to
the PAC last year (we had 120 companies who contributed a total of
$350,000):
Acme Safety & Supply
Company
Angus Asphalt, Inc.
Area West Fence Company
Barnhart, Inc.
Bergelectric
Bolts 4 U
Brady Company / San Diego

On behalf of our PAC
Chair and AGC’s Board of Directors…thank you! A
“Special
Thank You” goes to
Barnhart, Inc., Bergelectric, Burch Construction, Coffman Specialties,
Daley Corporation, Erreca’s, Inc., FCI Constructors, Helix Construction,
Herzog Construction, J.R. Filanc Construction, Jaynes Corporation, Roel
Construction, and T.B. Penick & Sons! Each
company committed $5,000 for 2007
and
2008!
That is called COMMITMENT!
With our goal for 2007
and 2008 set at $250,000 each year, you can see we still have work to
do…that is why I have attached a “pledge” form. The form is painless to
complete, as evidenced by the 39 companies who have already made the
financial commitment.
There are 81 more
companies that contributed last year (thank you!)…please consider making
another financial commitment. I know there are other companies that
also understand the importance of investing in AGC’s political action
activities, so please consider completing the attached pledge form.
Thank you!
