2014 MCRD BOOTCAMP CHALLENGE

Safety Training September 29, 2014 AGC Monday Morning Quarterback Article:

Oorah! 252 AGC members compete in the 2014 MCRD BOOTCAMP CHALLENGE
By Marcy Knopman, AGC's Bootcamp "Recruiter"

This past Saturday, for the 3rd consecutive year, AGC participated, as well
as sponsored, the MCRD BOOTCAMP CHALLENGE. This event is a
collaborative effort with the AGC Build & Serve Committee and the AGC
Safety Committee. Proceeds from our registration will go to support our
military heroes through the efforts of the Marine Corps Community Services,
the Wounded Warrior Project, and Words of Comfort, Hope & Promise.
Thanks to our participating AGC members and firms, we are proud to
announce we have raised a total of $11,866, which will make a difference in
the lives of our Marines/Wounded Warriors and their families, who selflessly make a difference in our lives by protecting us each and every day!

The San Diego construction industry is a strong supporter of our military presence in San Diego, and AGC's support of this event is a small way that our industry demonstrates our appreciation of all the sacrifices those in the military make for our
country, and all the opportunities the military provides our industry to build the facilities on the various bases located in Southern California.

Our team motto is very apropos..."WE BUILD WHAT THEY PROTECT."

The MCRD BOOTCAMP CHALLENGE is definitely not for the faint of heart.
Civilians are provided access to the base during Fleet Week for a furious 3-
mile course featuring obstacles, which includes rope crawls, scaling walls,
climbing over haystacks, crawling through pipes, climbing over logs, push-up
station, etc. This exact course is used by Marine Recruits during their intense
12-week basic training here in our very own backyard. Our members get
a taste of the physically and mentally challenging training the recruits
encounter during their rigorous training; the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in
San Diego is where real "Marines are made!"

This event would not have been successful without the support of our

2013 MCRD BOOTCAMP CHALLENGE

Safety Training September 30, 2013 AGC Monday Morning Quarterback Article:

Oorah! 300 AGC members compete in the 2013 MCRD BOOTCAMP CHALLENGE on Saturday, September 28, 2013
By Marcy Knopman, AGC's Bootcamp "Recruiter"

The Build & Serve Committee, once again, chose the MCRD BOOTCAMP CHALLENGE as one of their "giving back to the community" projects. The San Diego construction industry is a strong supporter of our military presence in San Diego, and AGC's support of this event is a small way that our industry demonstrates our appreciation of all the sacrifices those in the military make for our country, and all the opportunities the military provides our industry to build the facilities on the various bases located in Southern California.

This was the 2nd year that AGC sponsored and participated in the MCRD Bootcamp Challenge.

AGC "recruited" 300 AGC members and their family/friends to form "TEAM AGC", the largest representation of any organization at the event. AGC definitely made an impression with their black and lime green shirts, (designed by Jessica Kovack and Marcy Knopman) imprinted with the team motto: WE BUILD WHAT THEY PROTECT."

Last year, 150 AGC members, hailing from 34 AGC companies, represented TEAM AGC, resulting in an $8,500 contribution to the Marine Corps Community Services, (MCCS), which provides essential programs that enhance the life of the Marines and their families serving in San Diego.

This year, we had a record number of 300 AGC members, family, and friends, from 53 companies, who joined together in solidarity to form "TEAM AGC," and successfully raised an astounding $12,800 to support MCCS, as well as the Wounded Warrior Homes, which supports our soldiers returning from oversees with traumatic brain injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

A real honor was when Commanding General Beerman stopped by our VIP area to thank Jim Ryan and AGC for their sponsorship, participation, and support for the military. We presented CG Beerman with an AGC jacket and a Safety Committee challenge coin, which he very much appreciated.

The MCRD BOOTCAMP CHALLENGE is a fun and furious 3-mile course featuring obstacles, such as rope crawls, scaling walls, haystacks, crawling through pipes, climbing over logs, etc., used only by Marine Recruits at the Marine Recruit Depot during their intense 12 week basic training. Our participants got a taste of the physically and mentally challenging course, and were "encouraged" along the way at each obstacle by MCRD Drill Instructors. Racers compete as an elite, individual, or a member of a 3- person or 5-person team.

Jon Krause from Flatiron West, Los Angeles says it all, "As a Mustang Captain in the Marine Corps, "unity of effort and high motivation can accomplish anything," ~ Semper Fi.

One of our very own TEAM AGC 5-person team, and new AGC member, 2 Brothers Construction, placed 1st amongst all the 5-person team competing in the race. This is quite a feat, and a big congratulations to the 2 Brothers Construction Team.

We named our first 12 racers who crossed the finish line our "Dirty Dozen." The Dirty Dozen received an AGC towel for all their sweat and determination to finish the race in record time, and they were:

Females:
Angela Fassett, SMART Safety Group; Alex Quindt, Marks, Finch, Thornton & Baird, LLP; Evelyn Zaragoza, Erickson-Hall; Gladys Balderas, Volunteer from Wounded Warrior Homes; Katelyn Kingsley, Marks, Finch, Thornton & Baird, LLP, and the Kirkpatrick sisters (tie between Shea and Sutton) from Kirkpatrick & Associates.

Men:
Johnny McClelland, Bobby Lipton, SMART Safety Group; Rob Fassett, SMART Safety Group; John Renquist, Balfour Beatty Construction; Steve Fleming, Erickson-Hall Construction; and Bill Bewley.

We will have to wait for the race times to be posted on www.bootcampchallenge.com website to view the final times for TEAM AGC to determine our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male/female winners.

In the meantime, the company with the largest "battalion" was awarded to SMART Safety Group with 17 "recruits." Congratulations.

The member companies who participated in the challenge were: 2 Brothers Construction; Apprenticeship Staff; Angus Asphalt, Inc.; Balfour Beatty Construction; Baker Electric; Bergelectric Corp.; Big R Bridge; BPI Plumbing; Casper Company; Cavignac & Associates; CleanFleets.net; CMR Risk & Insurance Services, Inc; Cox Construction Co.; C.W. September 29, 2012- It is no secret that San Diego's construction industry is a strong supporter of the military. Not only do we appreciate the sacrifices of the men and women based in San Diego, as well as those that are on deployment throughout the world, we also appreciate the opportunity the military gives our industry to build the facilities on the various bases located in Southern California. AGC demonstrated the construction industry's support for the sacrifices those in the military make by participating and sponsoring the 2012 Marine Corps Recruiting Depot (MCRD) Bootcamp Challenge. This event was a "joint venture" of AGC's Build and Serve Committee and the AGC's Safety Committee. The Bootcamp Challenge was part of the 2012 Fleet Week San Diego which is held each year to honor and celebrate the men and women serving in our armed forces. AGC successfully raised a total of $9,000 to support the efforts of the Marine Corps Community Services San Diego in providing essential programs that enhance the life of the Marines and their families. There were 34 AGC member companies represented at the event, with 150 AGC members participating as a part of “TEAM AGC.” The team slogan for this event, submitted by Kristine Wunder from Turner Construction was very apropos; “We BUILD what you PROTECT”
